Jacques and Jean SENNETON editors (Lyon? - 1553 and 1559) "Portrait of Bartolo da Sassoferrato" Original woodcut for the graphic set of Bartolo da Sassoferrato's work "Bartoli de Saxoferrato in primam digesti veteris partem" published in Lyon by the Senneton brothers all the Salamandre sign in 1546. Nice copy with the typographical text on the reverse, complete with framing line and in perfect condition. The Sennetons were a family of Lyonnais publishers and book merchants of the 16th century, they operated in particular between 1544 and 1575, in what has been considered "the Age d'Or de l'Imprimerie lionnaise". Bartolo da Sassoferrato was born in a hamlet of Sassoferrato, in the Marches, between 1313 and 1314, in fact there is no unanimity in determining the date, from a family of modest possibilities but still sufficient to direct him to study with the Franciscan friars of Sassoferrato. At just fourteen, Bartolo went to study legal subjects in Bologna and Perugia and his talent was not long in emerging until he became an adviser to Emperor Charles IV. He wrote a multitude of treatises and commentaries that have remained as milestones in the history of legal thought to the present day. For an in-depth biography see the essay dedicated to him in the Biographical Dictionary of Italians. Bibliography: Baudrier "Bibliographie Lyonnaise" 1908 volume VII page 401. Tamet "Les Senneton marchands-libraires à Lyon au XVIe siècle" Lyon 2011 pag. 63. Calasso "Biographical Dictionary of Italians" 1964 vol.6 (Bartolo da Sassoferrato) Measures in mm: 120 x 93
